Abengoa receives go-ahead for world’s reverse osmosis desalination plant

According to *Constructionweekonline news report, Spanish firm Abengoa has received the go-ahead to begin works on the construction of, what it says is, the world’s reverse osmosis desalination plant, located at the Al Taweelah Power and Desalination Complex in Abu Dhabi.
The Seville-headquartered renewables and engineering firm will commence early works on the plant, valued at $700m with a capacity of 909,000 m3/d, in consortium with Chinese construction and engineering firm SEPCOIII.
Abengoa said it received the order to start early works order on the plant – located in the Taweelah desalination complex 45km north of Abu Dhabi – from Riyadh-based ACWA Power, which is tasked with building the project.
The plant, the firm added, will be the “first large-scale desalination plant” in Abu Dhabi that combines the production of drinking water, alongside clean energy generation from a 40 MWp photovoltaic (PV) solar field.
The scope of the project includes the collection of seawater, pumping and pre-treatment capabilities, as well as a reverse osmosis system with energy recovery, and post-treatment.
A pumping station will also feature, alongside water storage, effluent treatment facilities, and the associated electrical installations required for the construction of an 132/34.5 kV electrical substation.
Abengoa is somewhat of a central figure in GCC’s energy and water sector.
It is one of the one of the main technology providers and key subcontractors for the Noor Energy 1 solar plant in Dubai. The group is building the project in partnership with Acwa Power, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), and Shanghai Electric Group Co (SEGC).
It has also submitted an expression of interest (EOI) to work on the Yanbu 4 Independent Water Project (IWP) in Saudi’s Ar Rayyis, 140km west of Madinah, as reported by Construction Week last month.
