According to *Constructionweekonline news report, Bahrain issued 2,576 building permits in the first quarter of 2019, a 4.2% hike compared to corresponding numbers for Q1 2018, according to Bahrain's Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs, and Urban Planning, HE Eng Essam Khalaf.

The country’s Municipal One-Stop Shop issued 192 building permits for investment projects valued at $474.8m (BHD179m) across an estimated area of 65.2ha during Q1.

Among the major infrastructure projects covered during the period included the expansion of Bahrain International Airport and Phase 2 of Al-Dur water and power plant.

Bahrain uses the Benayat system, which allows for the fast-tracking of obtaining building permits.

Through Benayat, obtaining permits takes an average processing time of three working days, and is restricted from exceeding five days, state news agency, BNA, reported.

Eng Khalaf noted that 88 building permits were awarded through the system during Q1, of which 76% were for residential projects and 24% for investment and special projects.
