Grimshaw Architects has won an international competition to design a series of sports facilties in Qatar, according to reports. The firm defeated an unnamed shortlist to win the Qatar Olympic Committee-backed project, the Architects Journal said.

Sports pitches, courts, outdoor children’s playgrounds, public amenities and social areas are all included in the winning design. In addition, an elevated café will occupy the centre of each facility and fabric canopies are also planned to provide shade over seating and pathways, the report added.

According to Grimshaw partner, Keith Brewis, " We are delighted to know our design will create highly accessible informal public space that enriches social activities while also developing athletic talent within the local community. This project provides an opportunity for Qatar to encourage all its residents to lead healthy lifestyles.”
