Qatar awards new container port construction contracts worth US$ 3.8 bn

Qatar has awarded construction contracts worth QR 14 billion (US$ 3.8 billion) for a new container port, (part of the New Port Project – NPP) which will be located in Mesaieed south of the capital Doha.


The port, which is being built at an estimated cost of US$ 7.4 billion, will be able to handle two million containers when the first phase is completed, and upon completion of the other two phases, a capacity of six million tonnes will be reached, reported Emirates 24/7, citing ministry officials.

In keeping with the 2030 National Vision, which promotes diversity and sustainability, of the awarded contracts, nearly 53% of them had been won by Qatari firms. The work on the first phase of the project is progressing well and is expected to be ready in 2016.
