Posted on 2nd July 2014

Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) is to expand its production capacity, according to local news reports. The company plans to build a new plant in Umm Al Haul with an installed capacity of 2,400MW of power and 130mn gallons of desalinated water per day.

The plan was announced by QEWC’s general manager, Fahad Al Muhannadi, during an interview with Al Sharq newspaper. “We expect to award the contract within the next three months. Four companies have expressed interest to participate in the bidding process,” Al Muhannadi said.

Estimates suggest Qatar’s current power generation capacity is 8,700 MW, while the expected peak load during summer this year is about 6,800 MW, which means there is a surplus capacity of about 2,000 MW.
