Saudi Arabia has invited bids for the US$16.5 billion Makkah Metro project, involving the construction of 88 train stations, including 22 underground depots, to be fully operational in 2020.

A total of 10 consortia have bid for the first phase of the project involving civil works. The contract will be signed in early October, according to news reports quoting the city's Mayor Osama al Bar. "We have asked them to submit their bids for this project. We intend to sign the contract with the winning bidders in early October," he said.  The project would be launched in mid-2015 and would be operated on a trial basis in 2017 before it is fully commissioned at the start of 2020, according to the report.
