Early 2017, it was announced that UAE will build the first city on Mars as part of the 2117 Mars project in collaboration with specialised international organisations and scientific institutes. As a continuation, in September 2017, the UAE revealed plans to build a city called Mars Scientific City in UAE, a Dh500 million project that will simulate life on Mars. The city will consist of several domes, with innovative construction techniques providing support for the structures. A team of Emirati scientists, engineers and designers, led by a team from the Mohammad Bin Rashid Space Centre and Dubai Municipality, will carry out the project, in cooperation with internationally renowned architects Bjarke Ingels.
In October 2017, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced an ambitious project – the US$500 billion Neom in which Robots may outnumber humans and will spread across the borders of northwest Saudi Arabia into Jordan and Egypt. The city would be solely powered by renewable energy harvested by the sun and wind, creating a pollution-free environment. The food will be sourced from its own vertical farms and solar-powered greenhouses. The people will be travelling in automated vehicles, having access to free internet and online education, and living in zero-carbon homes. The first phase of construction is expected to complete by 2025, but details of what that will entail have yet to be released.Back to all ONSITE Exclusives
