According to *Tradearabia news report, Kuwait is working on a major plan to establish 'border towns' and is also in talks with the Iraqi authorities for developing a free zone between the two countries, according to a report.
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah stated that planned construction of border towns was currently "the preoccupation and focal task" of the government and the Supreme Planning Council, reported Kuna.
He was speaking during a follow-up session of the National Assembly, during which the MPs debated housing affairs namely the blueprint to erect a new central and integrated city.
"We are currently working on establishing border towns and we have discussed with the Iraq establishment of a free zone between Kuwait and Iraq," remarked Sheikh Nasser.
Kuwait's planned Madinat Al Harir (Silk City) will be built in a border region neighbouring Iran and Iraq, he added.
The minister indicated that the plan to develop Madinat Al Harir had been merged into the scheme to develop the five islands as well as the free trade zone. The new Silk City is likely to attract investments to the tune of a whopping $650 billion in the coming 25 years, he added.
