Contractor giant Brookfield Multiplex has been appointed the main contractor for 500 residential units being built in Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, a senior official from the sustainable city revealed to Construction Week on Monday (8 June, 2015).

The residential complex will contain 500 one- and two-bedroom apartments with amenities to be built and leased. Construction of the units within the development is scheduled to begin by September 2015, and is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2017, according to constructionweekonline news reports.

“The units will be built to LEED Gold, Estidama 3 Pearl standards and will include a gym, retail facilities, prayer room and landscaping," Masdar City director Anthony Mallows told Construction Week.

Mallows refused to divulge the total value of the development. Representatives from Brookfield Multiplex also denied to comment when asked by Construction Week about the project.

Besides working on expanding its first residential property, Masdar is also set to receive two new schools, the Emirates College of Technology (ECT) and GEMS Education within its premises in the near future.

“ECT’s permanent campus will include laboratories, workshops, study rooms, a library, an auditorium and a sports hall," Mallows said.

"GEMS Education will offer a premium UK curriculum at the kindergarten, primary and secondary education level,” he added.
