Flour gets Dow EPC contract to build components manufacture unit for Saudi desalination plants

Posted on 30th July 2014

desalination2Flour Corporation has been awarded the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by Dow Chemical Company to build a new manufacturing unit to manufacture high end reverse osmosis components for desalination plants in Saudi Arabia. The plant will be located close to the Sadara chemical complex in the Jubail Industrial City II of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province.

The facility will be the first reverse osmosis plant to be built by Dow outside its home market, the US. Expected to be completed in 2015, the new manufacturing unit will generate 100 new jobs on opening.

Apart from meeting the domestic demand in the Saudi market that faces immense water scarcity, Dow has said the facility will allow for a more efficient brand of desalination plants to be built across the Middle East and Africa regions, as reverse osmosis is a much less energy-intensive method for desalinating seawater than traditional thermal methods.

Zuhair Allawi, president of Dow Saudi Arabia, said: “Fluor has demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience within this field and we are confident that the team will bring significant added value to the project.”
