Oman Railway Tender floated for the 207-km Sohar-Buraimi stretch of the country’s national railway network, according to the Oman Tribune.

The tender includes two lists for pre-qualification, infrastructure and IT systems, according to the Ministry of Transport. The list of qualified companies would be valid for four years. The construction tender will be for the first part (Al Buraimi-Sohar). The other parts which connect Salalah and Duqm ports with the GCC ports would be limited only to companies that qualified for the tender, it clarified.

A total of 18 consortiums and joint ventures prequalified to participate in the design and build package. The last date for bids is December 21. The bidding consortiums for the civil infrastructure and railway track include FCC Construction SA (leader), Larsen and Toubro Ltd and Khalid bin Ahmed & Sons; Strabag AG (leader), CCC Oman and Samsung E&C; Salini Impregilo Spa; China State Construction Engineering Corporation (leader) and SK E&C among others.

The five consortiums that are prequalified for technology systems are Ansaldo STS Spa; Bombardier Transportation Italy Spa (leader) and Sirti Spa;

This stretch would help connect Sohar port with the GCC rail network at Buraimi near the UAE border. A number of railway facilities, including stations, freight yards, wayside maintenance bases, and maintenance depots would have to be constructed. The 2,235-kilometer rail project in the country is proposed to be implemented in nine segments. It will be a diesel-powered line with double-track network.
