According to *Constructionweekonline news report, Oman’s strategy to upgrade airports, roads, ports, and logistics capabilities for the year ahead has been outlined by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Construction contracts to deliver the Bidbad to Sur motorway and a multi-lane route connecting Dibba, Limah, and Kasab will be awarded in 2019 according to Oman News Agency.

Phases 1 and 2 of the Adam to Thumrait road project, which aims to turn a single-lane highway into a four-lane carriageway, will be completed before the end of the year, and Al Sharqiyah Expressway is also due to open in 2019.

Oman's government wants to attract at least $1.3bn (OMR500m) in foreign direct investment this year for its free zones in Sohar and Salalah. Suwaiq Port, located 100km northwest of Muscat, will be expanded by building a 160m berth for goods and handling equipment.

To boost aviation capabilities, the rehabilitation of Muscat International Airport's southern runway will begin this year, and the ministry said it will also start implementing a masterplan to repurpose the old Muscat airport building. The construction of an aircraft maintenance building and a distribution centre for corrosive materials at Muscat International Airport will also be carried out in 2019.

Additionally, the ministry will float the second phase of its study into building an airport in Musandam.

Plans are in place to develop and operate ports in Khasab and Shinas, and to work on the oversight of a rock quarry in Sohar Port and the Khazaen land port, the ministry said. Additionally, as part of the ministry's telecommunications strategy, up to 85,000 residential and commercial units nationwide will be equipped with high-speed fibre optic cables.
