The authority said that the island will be in the Khalid Lagoon and cover 45,470 square meters. It will have a Butterfly House structure that will be home to more than 500 exotic butterflies, a blossom-shaped Literature Pavilion containing an open seating area for writers, a version of the OVO Art Sculpture, a children's playground and a pontoon for boats that will ferry people from Al Qasba, Al Majaz Waterfornt and the Heart of Sharjah.

The island has been designed by Austrian artist Andre Heller, who was responsible for the Swarovski Crystal Worlds museum in Austria.

Shurooq CEO HE Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal said: “We are looking forward to seeing Al Noor Island as one of the premier tourist and leisure destinations in the emirate and the UAE, and as a unique venue for hosting and organising various events and activities.

"We are confident that this new project will attract thousands of visitors from all backgrounds and will be one of the emirate’s most popular landmarks."

The island is due to complete in the fourth quarter of 2015.
