Sur Independent Power Project (IPP), Oman's largest power project is scheduled to complete commissioning by the end of the third quarter of 2014, according to Oman Power and Water Procurement Co’s (OPWP) recently published annual report. OPWP said the commissioning of the IPP, expected to add a total of 2,000 megawatts (MW) to Oman's contracted capacity, is among its top priorities in 2014.

The report also revealed that OPWP had to contract temporary generation for the Main Interconnected System (MIS) to provide system support during 2013, as “this was necessary due to construction delays relating to the Sur IPP's early power units”.

OPWP also said that the Al Ghubrah Independent Water Project (IWP), which is owned by Muscat City Desalination Co and is currently under construction, is “expected to achieve a commercial operation date by the first quarter of 2015”. The plant has a contracted desalination capacity of 191,000  cubic meters per day (42mn imperial gallons per day) using reverse osmosis (RO) technology.
